NY TIMES – ‘INSIDE THE KNOCK-OFF TENNIS-SHOE FACTORY’

“The profits are high while the penalties are low.”

That’s the central point around the reason behind counterfeiting kicks; fakes bring in the cash and getting caught will get you a slap on the wrist. Nicholas Schmidle, a journalist for the New York Times, embarked on an investigative journey digging into the importation and manufacturing of the world’s most counterfeited item – the sneaker. Schmidle visited a fake-factory in Putian, China, managed by a man named Lin, who in the eyes of sneakerheads, reads like one of the many Bernie Madoffs of the footwear industry. According to Lin, as long as the demand for sneakers is there, the demand for fakes will follow suit. The counterfeiting business – while illegal – is viewed as an everyday job in Putian; wanted-ads are posted publicly and people accept the jobs fully aware of the nature of the employment.

How does Lin and all other factory managers make counterfeits so well? Nike employees in its China-based factories were bribed for sample models or blueprints, and some went as far as throwing a fresh pair over the Nike factory wall, into the hands of a counterfeiter looking to make a few-thousand pairs of Air Force 1s or Tiempos or shoes that haven’t even released yet. With heightened security and penalty for such infractions, the factory managers simply walk into a store and buy a single pair of the newest items, only to be taken apart and relentlessly cloned into a lower-quality product.

Air Jordan (2) Retro- Candy Pack Octber 2010

BREAKING NEWS:
Last week, some new style numbers popped up, indicating that, in addition to the OG White/Black/Red, 25th Anniversary and University Blue versions, there will be at least three new colorways of the Air Jordan II dropping in 2010. Thanks to these new pics, we can all stop speculating on what they might look like and actually see for ourselves. Dubbed as the “Candy Pack,” all three new colorways of the Air Jordan II will feature brightly colored tonal uppers with black accents, similar in color blocking to the recently released University Blue/Black edition that dropped last weekend. The Candy Pack won’t be hitting retail until the fall, with all three colorways presently set to release on October 30th. Stay tuned to Sneaker News for more on this upcoming pack and check out some more info after the jump.

2010 thus far was filled to the brim with Air Jordan Retro releases; the Air Jordan VI and Air Jordan IX saw seven separate releases each, and we’re not even counting the kids colorways. Even yesterday, Sneaker News broke the news about the Air Jordan II ‘Candy Pack’ slated for a release later this year. It was time to step aside and take in Retro influx, but it looks like Jordan Brand isn’t done yet; a rumored re-release of the Air Jordan XIII (13) ‘Altitude’ is expected to drop sometime during the Holiday season. The Altitudes dropped in February of 2005, which makes the re-release of a somewhat recent shoe questionable considering the number of Air Jordan XIIIs that have yet to see a second at-bat.

Also rumored for a Summer 2011 release is the Air Jordan III (3) True Blue and the Air Jordan VII (7) Cardinal. The Cardinal was even more recent than the Altitudes, releasing just four years ago in the summer of 2006 alongside the “Flint” VII. The True Blue III did indeed release just last year as an Asia-only release, but this is one re-release we can wholly agree on as a stateside drop-date seems probable. Also confirmed for Summer 2011 is the Air Jordan VII Bordeaux which has been pushed back to from its original early 2011 ETA. With all these releases in the books, Jordan Brand is taking a completely relentless approach with the Retros, giving Jordan-heads almost no time to make decisions. Will you cop them all? Let us know what you think of these upcoming releases. via NT.
